By Lena Salino and Gwen Larsen, PT, DPT Tedy’s Team Center of Excellence in Stroke Recovery

May is National Stroke Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing public understanding of stroke, the warning signs, and the vital importance of timely intervention. Recognizing the symptoms of a stroke and acting swiftly can significantly improve outcomes and save lives.

Acting fast

Lynn was driving her mother home after a shopping trip when suddenly, her mother slumped sideways, and her speech became unintelligible. Her mother recognized the symptoms as potential signs of stroke and rushed her to the nearest hospital. Her mother had indeed suffered a stroke, but quick action by her daughter and prompt medical treatment meant that she was able to leave the hospital just 3 days later without any significant lasting effects.

Understanding Stroke and Its Impact

A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. This can lead to the death of brain cells within minutes, resulting in lasting neurological damage, disability, or death. Strokes are a leading cause of serious long-term disability and rank fifth among all causes of death in the United States.

Recognizing the Signs of Stroke: BE FAST

Prompt recognition of stroke symptoms is critical. Acting quickly by calling 911 ensures appropriate medical treatment, potentially reducing the severity of the stroke’s impact. The acronym BE FAST is a helpful tool to identify the common signs.

  • Balance: Loss of balance or coordination.
  • Eyes: Trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Face: Facial drooping or numbness on one side.
  • Arms: Weakness or numbness in one arm.
  • Speech: Slurred speech or difficulty understanding others.
  • Time: Time to call emergency services immediately if any of these signs suddenly occur.

Acting fast at the first symptoms of stroke can reduce disability and might even save a life. Be informed and BE FAST!
