NEW Health is pleased to announce the availability of two scholarships in honor of Elaine Wilson, the founder of NEW Health, and Dr. John Foster, the longtime Chief Medical Officer of the health center.
These $5,000 cash scholarships are awarded to health center employees who are in good standing and residents of the communities we serve who display a genuine interest in community primary care, public health, and or community outreach through either academic study or continuing education.
The Elaine Wilson Scholarship for Community Health Outreach and Public Service
Established in 2023, the Elaine Wilson Scholarship for Community Health Outreach and Public Service was named in honor of NEW Health’s founder and first Chief Executive Officer, Elaine Wilson who joined the health center movement in 1971 and opened one of the first Federally Qualified Health Centers in the country. Through her unwavering commitment and passion to provide much needed accessible and affordable healthcare services for the residents of the North End she opened the health center in 1972. As both a state and national leader on community-based health care issues, Elaine promoted the value of health centers in improving access to quality health care while reducing costs across the health system. This scholarship is available to a resident of either the North End or Charlestown communities.
The John Foster, MD, MPH Community Primary Care and Public Health Scholarship
Established in 2023, the John Foster, MD, MPH Community Primary Care and Public Health Scholarship was named in honor of Dr. John Foster who served as the health center’s CMO from 1989 – 2024. Throughout his 35-year leadership tenure with the health center, Dr. Foster demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improve the health outcomes of patients. He was instrumental in shaping the organization’s medical practices and fostering a culture of excellence that put the patient at the center of their care. His exceptional service to the community and the health center will have a long lasting impact in years to come.
