NEW Health Names North End Resident, Jason Aluia, to Health Center Board Chair

North End Community Health Committee Inc. has named a new chair to its consumer board of directors. D/B/A North End Waterfront Health (NEW Health), Jason Aluia, was elected to the position at the organization’s monthly board meeting on September 18 and assumed his role on October 1, succeeding former Board Chair, Alan Hobbs.

Mr. Aluia is a lifelong resident of the North End and has served as an active board member to the health center for the last four years. He is Senior Director of Government and External Affairs at the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, an organization of 17 of the Commonwealth’s health insurers that cover over 3 Million Massachusetts residents. He previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Legislative Director to former House Speaker, Sal DiMasi, and prior to that, served as former Speaker DiMasi’s Director of Constituent Services.

Mr. Aluia attended Suffolk University, and is very active in the neighborhood, serving on numerous boards and committees, including the St. Anthony Feast Society; the Christopher Columbus Day Celebration Committee; and is the chairman of the Ward Three Democratic Committee of Boston.

NEW Health operates three community health centers in the North End, Charlestown, and at the Charlestown High School. With a yearly budget approaching $25 million and over 170 employees, the center cares for over 15,000 patients annually. Recently, NEW Health was the only Massachusetts health center to receive the Federal Department of Health and Human Services’ (HRSA) highest award, National Quality Leader. Established in 1971 by Elaine Wilson and local community activists, they are accredited by the Joint Commission and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). NEW Health will celebrate its 50th-anniversary celebration in the Spring of 2021.
