North End Waterfront Health offers the highest quality primary care services. Our physicians are board certified in Internal or Family Medicine, and are on the medical staff of the world renowned Massachusetts General Hospital. At NEW Health, our goal is to treat every patient as a whole and unique individual, one who deserves and receives the best healthcare services available.

NEW Health medical patients work with a primary care team, which includes a primary care provider and a nurse or medical assistant who are actively involved in your care. Your primary care physician (PCP) coordinates your care and assures that you receive the necessary medical and ancillary care. You can turn to your primary care doctor, one of our other doctors, or our nurse practitioners for routine physical exams, preventive medicine, diagnosis, and treatment of simple or complicated medical problems and referrals to specialists. For our patients’ convenience, we offer onsite laboratory, X-ray and Pharmacy services.

Adult Primary Care

Your pediatrician, pediatric family medicine doctor, and nurse practitioner provide complete care for your child, including regular checkups, immunizations, health screenings, developmental monitoring and urgent care visits. Pediatrics patients have their own child-friendly waiting room. Our health care services are sensitive to the needs of adolescents and provide support on a variety of lifestyle issues.

Behavioral Health Department North End Waterfront Health’s Behavioral Health Department has been providing quality outpatient behavioral health and psychiatric services since 1971. Our mission is to provide culturally sensitive and affordable mental health services in a confidential, professional and supportive environment.

We are committed to offering high-quality care from initial contact and intake evaluation to discharge planning and aftercare involvement. As part of the North End Waterfront Health Patient-Centered Medical Home, we provide an integrated care experience that coordinates services with primary care providers, involves relevant family members and includes contact with previous and current providers in other community and health settings. Our goal is to make the most appropriate and effective treatment plan for each patient. Our interdisciplinary team includes a psychologist, licensed social workers and board-certified psychiatrists. All our clinicians are committed to providing thorough mental health evaluation and treatment services to adults, children and families to foster growth and emotional development.

We are affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital and all our psychiatrists have admitting privileges there. The NEW Health Behavioral Health Department is also affiliated with Boston Medical Center for in-patient treatment or psychological and neuropsychiatric testing for patients with BMC HealthNet or Network Health insurance plans.

Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurances are accepted and services are also available on a sliding fee scale for those who meet eligibility requirements.

Behavioral Health

North End Waterfront Health’s Dental Department has been providing quality, comprehensive, and affordable dental services since 1977. Our interdisciplinary team of highly experienced professionals is committed to providing thorough dental health services to adults and families.

The dental department offers the following services to adults and families:

Dental Care

It is our mission to provide comprehensive, high quality eye care for our patients. In collaboration with the New England College of Optometry and the NECO Clinical Network, we manage all aspects of primary eye care by a team of experienced optometrists and a consulting ophthalmologist. We are committed to delivering our services in a caring and compassionate manner, to improve visual health, function, and quality of life.

Our providers perform comprehensive dilated eye exams on children and adults of all ages. It is important for children to have complete eye exams early and throughout childhood, to prevent the development of strabismus (an eye turn or lazy eye) and amblyopia (decrease in vision, not corrected by glasses). Eye exams can also help detect cataracts, glaucoma, retinal disease, as well as diabetes and high-blood pressure.

The eye care department offers the following services: 

    • Comprehensive vision exams for adults and seniors
    • Pediatric vision exams for infants and children (Success in school depends on good vision!)
    • Annual diabetic eye health evaluations
    • Diagnostic and medical treatment of eye diseases

Vision Center

North End Waterfront Health’s Podiatry Department has been providing comprehensive foot care for members of the entire family for the past 12 years. Foot disorders can be particularly uncomfortable and disruptive to day-to-day life. NEW Health’s podiatry practice is dedicated to providing relief from foot pain and helping patients regain mobility and comfort so that they can enjoy their daily activities.

NEW Health podiatrists provide a number of options to provide relief from foot pain. Whether your discomfort is the result of a sports-related injury or a chronic condition, our podiatrists will explain your treatment choices in clear, understandable terms. Our goal is to assist you in choosing a course of treatment that best meet your needs and suits your lifestyle.

Some of the more common foot conditions addressed by NEW Health podiatry practice include:

Our gynecologist (GYN) can care for women with gynecological problems that require a specialist from the time they reach adolescence though their geriatric years.

For pregnant women, our Obstetrician, (OB) and nurse practitioner will follow your pregnancy until delivery. Delivery will take place at Massachusetts General Hospital, where there is a neonatal intensive care unit should the need ever arise.

A referral from a North End Waterfront Health doctor is required for OB/GYN services. Our OB/GYN provider is on staff at MGH. Routine GYN care is generally performed by our primary care providers.

Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN)

For the convenience of our patients, we have X-Ray services on site. Our digital X-Ray machine sends images directly to MGH for radiologic interpretation, as well as to the computer of your provider for instant analysis during your visit.

Our X-ray staff will also help you schedule outside tests such as CT or MRI scans as ordered by your provider team.


For the convenience of our patients, we have laboratory services on site, with all samples sent to the MGH lab.
We perform some common services on site such as rapid strep and pregnancy tests.

    • We draw blood and take other samples and send them to the Massachusetts General Hospital Laboratory for analysis.
    • Results will be either mailed to you or sent via Patient Gateway by the ordering provider within 2-3 weeks, unless more urgent follow-up is indicated. In that situation, the health care team will contact you with advice on what follow-up care is needed.
    • Most routine X-Ray studies can be done at the health center.
    • We will refer you to MGH for other diagnostic tests.
    • We will arrange the referral and scheduling with you.

Personal care homemaking

Our personal care homemakers come to your home to perform light housekeeping and cleaning. They can also assist with bathing, dressing and laundry. Escorts to appointments can be arranged. The amount of time in your home is up to you. We accept Boston Senior Home Care clients as well as private pay clients.

Elder Services

Medical Social Services

Our medical social service staff helps patients understand and navigate health care appointments, insurance questions, billing problems, prescription coverage, transportation scheduling and many other areas. Their assistance helps you follow through with the health care your clinician has recommended. They can also help with planning for services needed to stay safely at home, like homemakers and emergency call alerts. When staying at home is no longer an option, they can help with the difficult decisions related to assisted living and nursing home care.

Outreach and Medical Social Services

Health Education for NEW Health Patients and Family

It is the mission and philosophy of North End Waterfront Health to provide each patient and their family members with relevant health education pertaining to their illness and treatment. Health education is provided at each visit and is tailored to the individual needs and abilities of each patient.

Health education, which is an ongoing process, may consist of both written material and verbal instruction. Health education includes, but is not limited to, teaching about safe and effective use of medications, the proper use of medical equipment, smoking cessation, and nutritional counseling. Every patient is advised of their rights and responsibilities as a patient at NEW Health. Health education referrals are made for all departments as needed by the patient and family.

Outreach to the Community

North End Waterfront Health is committed to the overall health and wellbeing of the North End community and its residents. Via NEW Health’s outreach initiatives, our goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle in the neighborhood and to target outreach efforts to those individuals and groups that are finding it difficult to access our services. To meet the identified needs of the diverse populations of the neighborhood, outreach education is provided to the community on a variety of health promotion and prevention topics.

NEW Health has formed collaborative relationships with the Department of Public Health, the City of Boston, and neighborhood schools and community centers to assess and identify needs of the North End community. Presentations are provided on a regular schedule to the students at both elementary schools (Eliot and St. John’s), the children in the after school and summer camp programs at the Nazzaro Community Center, and the elders at the elder housing sites and at the Nazzaro Community Center.

Patient Education and Outreach

Patients with limited English proficiency and deaf and hard of hearing patients have the right to a medical interpreter at no cost to them. Interpreter Services at NEWH is dedicated to helping providers establish a direct relationship with their non-English or limited-English proficient patients.

It is the policy of NEWH to provide interpreting and translation services for patients who prefer to communicate in a language other than English. NEWH is committed to providing the highest quality of care, our bilingual staff and interpreter services via Massachusetts General Hospital, MGH provide accurate and complete interpretation services.

All interpreters support the NEWH community in the delivery of culturally competent care and facilitate access to health center services for non-English- or limited-English-proficient patients.

We have certified medical interpreters on staff in the following languages:

    • Italian
    • Portuguese
    • Spanish

If the patient’s preferred language is other than the languages spoken by NEWH medical interpreter staff, patients may call MGH Interpreter Services at (617) 726-6966/TTY (617) 724-0354.

Patients and family members can call the Administrative Director at (617) 643-8230 to request a certified medical interpreter staff member for translation services.

Interpreter Services

North End Waterfront Health is happy to offer our in-house pharmacy service which is available to all patients of our practices, and conveniently located in the front lobby at the Hanover Street site.

We accept all insurance except some Cigna plans.

Enjoy the convenience of getting your prescriptions right where you get your care, from our friendly and informative pharmacists working closely with your care providers. We encourage you to let us take care of your prescription needs simply contact your provider or drop in and speak to one of our pharmacists. We will take care of transferring your prescriptions. As always, we thank you for entrusting your health care needs to NEW Health.


    • Refills of existing prescriptions are handled by calling the Prescription Line, 617-643-8111.
    • If you have questions about a new prescription or about discontinuing medication(s), please call your Care Team nurse. He/She will help you decide if you should come back in for a visit to discuss your prescription.
    • We have our own Pharmacy on site at the North End location, 617-643-2737.

Our vans transport patients and community members to medical appointments and other locations in the community for a nominal fee. Our drivers provide door to door service and are trained in assisting elders, CPR and first aid. The goal is to help patients and North End residents use community services and access the community. Companions and escorts on rides are welcome. Seat belts are required.

Acupuncture uses pressure points to help the body prevent and treat numerous ailments. Acupuncture helps the body fight off illness and decrease recovery time. A Licensed Acupuncturist perform all treatments.

Acupuncture can help:

    • Reduce pain and inflammation
    • Speed recovery from sports injuries such as tennis elbow, neck pain, frozen shoulder, sciatica, knee pain, foot and ankle pain
    • Chronic migraines and headaches

How does acupuncture work?

When an acupuncture point is stimulated (by pressure or a needle), it causes the release of endorphins. This release causes pain signals to be calmed as well as bring oxygen and blood to the area that was stimulated. The increase in blood and oxygen cause the muscle fibers to relax and encourages the natural healing process of the body to take place, helping to reduce pain and inflammation.

What to expect during an acupuncture treatment:

The length of treatment is normally 20 to 40 minutes. Most find the treatment to be relaxing and calming; some patients even fall asleep during treatment.

North End Waterfront Health offers two types of Acupuncture:

  • Individual Acupuncture
    • Treatment lasts 60 minutes and includes individualized acupuncture points based on your needs.
    • $75.00 first visit, $50.00 per follow-up visit.
  • Acupuncture for Substance Use
    • This is a specialized group service for symptoms associated with substance use issues. Acupuncture can assist the body’s natural detoxification and chemical production to relieve withdrawal symptoms, cravings, help manage stress, and level emotions associated with but not limited to nicotine, sugar, alcohol, and substance use.
    • Inform your NEW Health treatment team that you are interested and would like to be referred.
