H. Jack Geiger passed away at the age of 95 this Monday December 28, 2020
A lifelong civil rights activist and co-founder of the first health centers in the United States, Dr. Geiger played a pivotal role in the history of this nation’s now more than 1,300 Community Health Centers (CHC). A proponent of social medicine, Dr. Geiger believed not only in the treatment of ill patients, but also of the conditions that made them sick in the first place.
The health centers Dr. Geiger co-founded offered what he called “a road out” of poverty by providing desperately needed health care but also food, sanitation, education, jobs and social services. He was a founding member of two advocacy groups that later went on to be awarded Nobel Peace Prizes.
Dr. H. Jack Geiger paved the way for so much of what this nation’s over 1,300 CHCs stand for. A passionate civil rights activist until the very end, Dr. Geiger will remain an inspiration for NEW Health as we continue to care for our community.
